Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions

Because there are so many questions, we have collapsed all the answers by default. To reveal the answer to a question, click on "View Answer" after the question.

If you don't find the answers to your questions, you can visit the Blackboard Support Troubleshooting site or email your question to the Student Helpdesk at vista@unt.edu with the course name and number, contact information, and a description of your problem.

  • I am unable to log into Vista, what should I do?

Go here to read more about logging in: Cannot Login. If you continue to have problems, e-mail vista@unt.edu
  • Why do I need to disable the Pop-up blocker in Vista?

If the browser checker notified you that you have a pop-up blocker you will need to locate the source of the pop-up blocker and set it to allow pop-ups for Vista. If you do not allow pop-up blockers in Vista, you will not be able to use any tool that opens a new window. Such tools include email, discussions, and quizzes.
  • How can I disable a pop up blocker so that I can allow pop up windows to appear when I'm using Vista?

While using Vista, if you are unable to view discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links, then you need to allow pop-up windows. Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the Internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. However, this can prevent Vista from performing properly.

Follow these insructions on how to disable pop-up blocker programs.
  • When logging in, I'm getting the error, "Warning: Security The application's digital signature has an error. Do you want to run the application?" If I click "Yes" it freezes my computer or browser. How can I fix this?

NOTE: This information pertains to Windows users only.
Java 1.6.0_11 is recommended with Vista 4, NOT Java 1.5 Update 6 (1.5.0_06).
See supported browsers for Vista. Install the correct version of Java.
  • What is JAVA and why do I need it?

If the browser check showed that you do not have Java, you must download it and install it on your machine.

Java is a plug-in that you must have in order to:
    • Upload files or attach files to messages
    • Use Chat
    • Use the HTML Creator
  • Why don't I see my course listed in Vista?

You won't see your courses listed until the first day of the semester. We upload students into Blackboard for the first 12 class days until add/drops are over. You will notice a slight delay in the time that you register for a course and when you are uploaded into Blackboard. Please wait at least 24 hours from the time you register to be uploaded into Blackboard.
  • Why don't I see the Vista Student Tutorial (Ticket to Vista) listed in Vista?

Simply go to this link and follow the instructions to sign yourself up for the Student Vista Tutorial.
  • Why do I keep getting bumped back to the Log In page after I log in?

Are you using AOL? If so, connect to the Internet using AOL, then minimize your AOL browser. Then, open a supported browser and log into your Vista course.

***If you're not using AOL, make sure that you are using a supported browser, that you have configured your browser properly, you have uninstalled any browser toolbars and that you have disabled any popup blockers.
  • Why do I see this error message when I log into Vista: "Error: Session Already Running"?

You cannot have more than one Vista window open at a time. Try closing all browser windows and logging on again.
  • Why can't I access the Chat window or attach an assignment in the assignment drop box?

It sounds like you don't have Java installed on your machine. You must have the Java plug-in installed on your computer to make Vista work properly. Follow these instructions here: Configure Browser Settings.
  • I submitted my assignment but it shows up as "Missed". Why is this?

The most likely cause is that you may have saved the assignment as a draft, but forgot to actually submit it in time. When an assignment due date is reached, the assignment tool will automatically force submit all submissions. This includes all saved assignment submissions (i.e. drafts). The submitted date will be the date when the student saved the assignment last.
  • Why can't I access my quiz?

First, make sure that you don't have a pop-up blocker on your computer. You can check to see if you do here: http://www.unt.edu/helpdesk/faq/popup_blocker.htm

If you do, please see this page for instructions on how to disable it: Disable Popup Blockers. If you don't have a pop-up blocker on your computer, make sure that you contact your instructor right away. He or she may have to change a setting on the quiz.
  • Why am I getting an error message when using HTML creator, saying I couldn't use more than 4000 characters, when I do not have that many?

The error message is incorrect. HTML uses 3 bytes per character and 4000 bytes = 1333 characters. The limit for characters when using HTML is 1333 characters. So, the message incorrectly states that you cannot have more than 4000 characters, when it should really say that you cannot use more than 4000 bytes.
  • How do I request a copy of my email, discussions or other information from my Blackboard Vista course?

You will need to contact your professor or the department to make this request. Be sure to include the course and section number, as well as the semester in which you took the class.
  • What is the maximum file space that I have in my Blackboard Vista course?

For students, the maximum file size, including total space, is 100 megabytes.
